Does the ‘Boost for Mathematics’ boost mathematics results?

The ‘Boost for Mathematics’ is an in-service training programme for math teachers in Sweden, with the aim of strengthening the quality of instruction and boosting student performance. The National Agency for Education is responsible for implementing the initiative, where mathematics teachers are trained through collegial learning with the support of a math tutor, as well as via a web portal. The ‘Boost for Mathematics’ began in the 2012/2013 school year with a pilot scheme in a number of randomly selected schools. The main reform was gradually implemented during the academic years 2013/14 to 2015/16.

We evaluate the effects of the ‘Boost for Mathematics’ on pupils’ performance on national tests in mathematics in grades 3, 6 and 9, both within the pilot scheme and the national implementation. In collaboration with the National Agency for Education, we have conducted an annual survey on a sample of math teachers. It allows us to also study the effects of the training programme on teachers’ job satisfaction, work environment and teaching styles.
