Limbo or leverage? Asylum waiting and refugee integration

Dnr: 56/2019

In this project, we investigate whether the waiting time before asylum cases are closed affects the labour market integration of refugees. A handful of previous studies from different countries show that longer waiting times have negative effects. In connection with the strong influx of asylum seekers in 2015, the processing times of asylum cases increased significantly, which means that the policy issue is highly topical in Sweden as well; if long waits have negative effects, one policy response could be to increase the processing capacity.
