The purpose of this project is to address the following question: Does the local presence of the Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen, AF) matter for job seekers’ access to support and their future employment prospects?

The project examines the effects of the rollout of Personal Distance Meetings (PDM) as well as the closure of a large share of AF’s local offices.

The study is based on register data from AF and Statistics Sweden (SCB). The empirical strategy exploits temporal variation in the rollout of PDM between 2017 and 2019, as well as the closures of local employment offices during 2019–2020.
